Full description
Streatham Common has been one of the area’s defining open spaces for generations. Stretching across the hillside above Streatham, it combines broad grassy areas, tree-lined paths and far-reaching views with a strong sense of local identity.
The Common has long been used for recreation and community life, and today it remains one of the best places in Streatham for walking, running, dog walking, picnics and relaxed afternoons outdoors. Its open character makes it feel very different from the busier streets nearby, while still being easy to reach from the High Road and surrounding residential areas.
One of its biggest attractions is its connection with The Rookery, the historic landscaped gardens at the top of the Common. Together they create a varied visit: open grassland and big skies on the Common, followed by more formal gardens, mature planting and quieter corners in The Rookery.
Streatham Common is also closely tied to the history of the neighbourhood. As Streatham grew from a village into a major London suburb, the Common remained an important piece of open land and became an increasingly valuable public space for local residents.
